Full Scale Structural Test on Composite Wing

In the aerospace industry, ensuring the structural integrity of aircraft components is paramount. A UK based manufacturer sought to conduct a full-scale structural test on their latest Composite Wing. To achieve this, they turned to Moog and Savery Hydraulics for a reliable and advanced testing solution.


The Challenge

The manufacturer needed a comprehensive test system that could safely and accurately simulate the stresses and strains experienced by the composite wing during flight. The primary challenge was to develop a system that could prevent any unrepresentative loading in the event of a primary loading system failure, ensuring the safety and integrity of the test article.

The Solution

Moog and Savery Hydraulics provided an Aerospace Test System tailored to the customer’s stringent safety requirements. The system included:

Active Load Abort System: Designed to unload the structure synchronously in case of a failure, maintaining the desired load distribution.

Aerospace Control and Monitoring System: Upgraded from 12 to 24 channels to enhance control and monitoring capabilities.

Structural Test Actuators: Equipped with Active Safety Manifolds and controlled by servo valves, sized according to flow demands.

The Active Load Abort System utilised a Moog MC600 Machine Controller to ensure synchronised unloading, protecting the test article from undesirable loads.

The Result

The implementation of Moog and Savery Hydraulics Aerospace Test Systems allowed the manufacturer to conduct thorough and safe structural tests on their composite wing.

The system's advanced safety features and precise control mechanisms ensured the integrity of the test article, contributing to the successful validation of the wing's structural performance. This collaboration reinforced the long-term relationship between the customer and Moog and Savery Hydraulics team, highlighting their capability to meet critical aerospace testing needs. The test ran for 8 years, completing 1 1/2 life cycles and the wing is now fully operational on Airbus A220 aircraft.
